The first scientific and technical conference "Non-rocket industrialization of space: problems, ideas, projects" was held in Gomel on April 26-28, 1988 (see
program of the conference, in Russian).
A member of the USSR Federation of cosmonautics Anatoly Yunitskiy presented a report on "Principles to create an optimal transport system for industrial exploration of near-Earth space". The report substantiated physical and technological conditions that determine a large-scale industrialization of space with cargo traffic of millions of tons per year and passenger traffic of millions per year as an inevitable stage in the development of the human civilization. Based on the laws of physics - 4 conservation laws (energy, momentum, angular momentum and center-of-mass motion) - the criteria were specified and a systematic search for the optimal geocosmic transport that meets these criteria was conducted. None of the known geocosmic transport systems, including a carrier rocket, a space elevator, an electromagnetic gun, etc., meets the requirements of these criteria, except the General Planetary Vehicle.
Anatoly Yunitskiy presented a report "Ozonosphere of the Earth: current state, prospects for recovery and control", in which he made an analysis of the causes for the destruction of ozonosphere of the Earth and offered the way for its recovery. There were also proposed principles to control weather and planet's climate by regulating the content of ozone in the ozonosphere with the cargo version of the General Planetary Vehicle (GPV).
Anatoly Yunitskiy was also a co-author of the following reports:
- the report "Numerical simulation of the dynamics of the General Planetary Vehicle under acceleration";
- the report "Large-scale radiative modification of polymer materials in space".
According to most participants, the implementation of the GPV project is a real alternative to the program of "star wars." The "Microgravitron" project developed by Novocherkassk scientists could be the first stage towards the implementation of GPV and mass production of new constructional materials including high-purity ones under vacuum conditions and simulated zero gravity on Earth.
The conference adopted the decision on creating in the city of Gomel the Center "Star world" for the development and practical implementation of Anatoly Yunitskiy's inventions including those in the field of geocosmic non-rocket transport systems and ground transportation systems that use the technology of pre-stressed (strings) structures.
